Today, the popular Western view is that torture should not be employed in any interrogation. The waterboarding practices in Guantanamo Bay caused outrage, but also some division as there are those who feel that, when the steaks are high enough (like national security), all effective methods should be used.
However, is torture ever effective? Answers form the field of neuroscience suggest that torture is not an effective strategy in any case. A recent report in Newsweek cites some of the research into interrogation techniques which suggest that torture actually impairs a person's ability to tell the truth.
