Mad pride

Like Black Pride or Gay pride, Mad Pride is an organised movement that petitions for societal change.

Specifically Mad Pride activists believe that psychiatric intervention requires more vetting; it is too often left unquestioned to the detriment of those members of society who suffer from psychological "disorders", such as depression or schizophrenia.

The activists challenge the traditional diagnoses that pigeon-hole people into medical treatments. Recently ABC reported that Mad Pride activists say they're unique, not sick - that psychiatric conditions can be 'mad gifts' to be cherished, not medicated.

While this is a particularly extreme angle to take, there is truth in pushing the boundaries of diagnosis and understanding. Today traditional psychiatric care is often challenged in the light of new discoveries and further evidence surrounding mental health.
