Do animals think like us?

Studies into animal cognition suggest that animals may share more aspects of conscious processing than previously thought. That is the view of a psychologist who has conducted studies on the subject at the University of Buffalo. The argument - which focuses on metacognition - says that many animals may regulate their state of mind and monitor or reflect on thought processes similar to humans.

The research was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Development as well as the National Science Foundation. This developing area of science looks at the cognitive relationships between animal and human behaviour and has so far revealed some startling information.
